When most professionals teach the golf swing they do not highlight the most important part of the swing. If you are a high handicap player you will need to take this information to a good golfer or a professional and have him demonstrate the relaxed swing. Never fix your knees in any position, try fixing your knees and throwing a golf ball, and you will realize that fixing and using muscles to hold your self in a position, will never help. This relaxed swing is one of the most important part of what you need to know. Your upper body must be straight, never stretch down to the ball, lean forward allowing your posterior to move back as you do so. Having your arms straight without any tension, means moving your upper body, not over bending your knees. Stand so that the club you are holding with a loose grip, lightly touches the ground, concentrate on being very relaxed. Once you understand how to stand in a very relaxed way, you need to keep both arms straight for half of the swing, this is very difficult for the beginner learner golfer, and should be done in gradual stages. Start with a short swing, cocking your wrists to allow the club to swing and finish pointing straight up, both arms are straight to this point, and your hands are around waist high.Your upper body will need to turn at least 75 degrees. Do not worry about fixing your head in position, allow it to move during the swing, keep looking at the back of the golf ball throughout the swing. To assist you with this, turn the ball and position the logo on the side away from the target, line up your feet with the ball near to your left foot a comfortable distance in front of you, you should feel that the position is exactly right. The final part of the swing the right arm only is allowed to bend naturally. Practice this movement at first with out a club in your hands and then use a 9,8, or 7 iron. When using a club it is essential for at least 5 mins that you observe the club swinging into position and during this time you swing through an imaginary ball. The club head after swinging through the imaginary ball, finishes in position pointing straight up, your upper body has turned towards the target by at least 75 degrees, and your head has moved comfortably with this movement.
After repeating this movement you can then practice hitting balls, Do Not try to hit them hard, concentrate on the club head swinging up and back to the essential straight up position, from this position known as a half swing you are able to hit a golf ball 75% distance of a full swing. Until you are comfortable and consistent in each swing you really should not use either long irons or woods. The next part of the swing getting from the 75 degree turn to the full 90 degree position for a full swing is achieved not by lifting your arms, this is where most golfers go wrong, from the 75 Degree position to complete to a full swing 90 degree position, you turn ONLY your upper body. Your arms will naturally get into position without any conscious thought.
